2008년 4월 26일 킹스톤 한인학교의 입학식 및 백일장,미술대회가 열렸다. 원래 예정된 뉴몰든의 잘 알려진 쿰 여자 중.고등학교의*(아래 설명을 참조하시오.) 건물사정으로,이 날 하루만 특별히 빌린 뉴몰든 하이스트리트에 소재한 영국교회(뉴몰든 감리교회-한국인 목사님도 계심,도움에 감사드립니다.뿐만 아니라 우리가 교회를 빌리는 동안에도 어려운 일이 없는가 등등을 확인하시며 두 분의 목사님께서 이층 홀을 둘러 보시고,배려를 보이셨다)에서 열린 입학식은 참가인원이 약 50여명으로 유아,유치부를 포함한 초등학생과 중학생이었다.
오전 9시를 시작으로 입학식과 대회에 참가하기 위해 온 학생들과 학부모님들의 발걸음이 빨라졌다. 이민영 교장선생님의 킹스톤 한인학교가 설립된 배경과 선생님들의 소개 및 간단한 입학식 절차를 마치고, 학년 별 담임선생님과의 인사로 이어졌다.
이명선 선생님이 맡은 유아,유치부(담임 및 도우미 두 분이 운영)와 진기영 선생님이 맡은 4학년은 유난히 돋보이는 친화력을 자랑했으며, 다른 학급의 학생들도 장소 변경상 많은 결석에도(신청서 내시고 못 오신 분들께는 개별 연락 드리겠습니다.) 불구하고 담임선생님과의 시간을 즐겁게 보냈다.
글짓기와 미술대회가 끝난 후, 킹스톤 한인학교의 교가를 배우는 2교시 박미란 선생님의 음악시간이 시작되었다.(교가 작곡-박미란,작사-특별 도우미) 학생들과 선생님들은 입을 모아 애국가를 부르는 것을 시작으로 킹스톤 한인학교의 교가를 배웠고, 유치부들의 앙증맞은 노래와 율동을 관람하기도 했다.
3교시는 학생들이 가장 열심히 참여했던 체육시간. 하승수 체육 선생님의 주도로 요가와 필라테스가 포함된 스트레칭을 한 후, 고학년들을 앞세워 태권도 기본동작(발차기)를 배웠다.
하선생님의 특기는 끝이 없는 듯, 모두를 빨아들였고 체력 단련의 즐거움을 깨닫는 시간이었다. 학생들 뿐 아니라 지켜보던 선생님들도 참여하였고, 어느새 이층의 큰 홀(200명 규모) 안은 훈훈한 열기로 가득 찼다. 중간중간 물 마시고 사과 먹으며 쉬는 시간도 좋았다.어린이들의 높은 질서의식은 선진국에서 자라는 우리 2세의 아름다움을 느끼기에 충분한 감동이었다.
모두들 훈훈한 열기 속에 빠져 있을 때 시간은 어느덧 마지막 교시를 향해 가고 있었다. 킹스톤 한인학교 입학식을 축복해 주시러 오신 안병기 목사님의(런던영광교회,교회협의회 회장 역임,어린이 초교파 사역으로 알려지심) 설교말씀과 기도시간에는 학생들의 엄숙하고 정숙한 모습을 보게 됐고, 앞으로의 공부방향에 대해서도 생각해 보는 시간이었다.(학교의 교훈이 될 “잘 듣는 사람이 되자”) 또 교장 선생님의 특별 요청으로 축하방문을 하신 에드워드 루시(한국인:한국 성공회 수도원 소속:영국의 협력 수도원에서 연구차 체류 중, 한인의 생활모습을 보시고 조용한 봉사를 하셨다) 수녀님의 뒷받침과 돌봄은 모든 선생님과 학생들에게 따스한 안정감을 선사하셨다.수녀님은 높은 인기를 누리셨다(?,모두들 재방문을 요청함)
재미있는 퀴즈로 시작된 마지막 시간은 곽정훈 선생님의 미술시간. 너무나도 우아한 하얀 꽃을 앞에 두고, 움직이지 않는 물체를 그리는 정물화를 배우는 시간. 중심을 찾아내고 구도를 잡고 밑그림을 그리고 명암을 표현하는 등 기본 스케치를 그리는 방법에 대해서 배우면서 빛과 그림의 관계를 배우는 유익한 시간이었다.선생님의 기발한 아이디어로 어린이들의 집중력이 피곤한(체육 후라)중에도 최고로 높았다.
가슴마다 꿈이 한 치씩 자란 킹스톤 한인학교 어린이들의 입학식 및 백일장 미술대회가 끝났다.(학부형 여러분들의 높은 수준과 조용한 참여에 감사드립니다.)담임선생님의 출석과 귀가인사를 마친 학생들은 모두들 교회를 빠져나갔고, “반가워요 다음주에 학교에서 또 만납시다”.를 외쳤다.(쿰 여자 중.고등학교에서, 매주 토요일2:15-5:15)계약대로 창문과 문을 잠근 후에 올들어 가장 화창했던 4월의 햇살 속으로 행사를 잘 마친 만족함에 서로를 바라보며 웃음을 나누었다.-교회에 계시던 쥴리아라는 영국성도님(?,직책을 모름)께 이 글을 빌어 특별 감사를 드린다.이 글은 영어로 번역되어 학교 웹에 실을 예정,킹스톤 한인학교는 학교의 모든 진행상황을 최대한 영어로 병기하여 지역주민의 이해와 참여를 유도하고 한국어를 배울 의욕을 솟게 하는 편안함과 친화력을 보여주는 것도 목표의 하나임.그게 이방인으로서 주인되어 가는 과정의 가장 중요한 매너,예의가 아니겠는가?-아멘.
유난히 친화력을 자랑하던 진기영 선생님과 4학년 학생들은 점심시간 이후 다시 모여
뉴몰든의 공원에서 축구경기를 하며 즐거운 시간을 가졌는데 지켜보던 영국인들이나 다른 한인 어린이와 부모님들까지 합세하기를 원하였다. 다음 주의 학부형 광고를 통해 이를 계속할 예정이다.(5월 10일 5:30부터 다름 학년도 참여 가능함.)
뒤에 이어진 교사 회의에서는 어린이들의 모습에 고무된 교사들이 이구동성으로 행복한,만족한 날이라고 피로를 모르는 열정을 보여 교장 선생님을 감동시켰다.
*킹스톤 한인학교는 킹스톤에 위치한 쿰 여자중고등학교(남자는 12,13학년만)에서 매주 토요일 국어(한문), 수학, 사회 과목을 위주로 음악, 미술, 체육 등 4교시 수업이(시간표는 3주 단위로 교환-독서 특별지도,책을 기증해 주신 모든 분들께 감사드립니다.) 진행될 예정이다.(2:15-5:15학교 사정으로 광고와 달리 이번 학기 시간 변경됨을 알려드립니다.불편을 끼쳐 죄송합니다.) 자랑할 내용은 출중하고 잘 조화된 과목과 담임별 교사진이 어린 세대를 위해 부모의 마음으로 한글을 모르거나, 교과를 한국 수준에 맞추는 어느 요청도 커버할 경력과 실력을 갖췄다는 데에 있다.신설학교라서 학급당 인원이 적다는 강점이 있음.
런던에서 세 번째,뉴몰든에 처음으로 문을 여는 한인학교는 킹스톤 지방 정부와 협력하여 일하면서 이 지역 주민 모두의(인종,종교,문화를 넘어) 삶이 최대의 만족을 얻고 협력,상생의 윈,윈,윈 전략을 구사 중이다.

Kingston Korean School was opened on 26th April, 2008, along with essay and art competition. It was scheduled to hold in Coombe Girls’ School and yet its opening event was held in the Methodist Church hall on the New Malden High Street on this special day, due to the difficulty of renting School building. About 50 people including primary and secondary pupils attended at this launch day, starting from 9:00 a.m. After the parents registered, Grace M.Y. Kwak, Head Teacher, recounted the background of establishing the Kingston Korean School and introduced each teacher to the attendants. Although some pupils were absent due to the abrupt change of location, most pupils participated actively in the competition and enjoyed their time with their class teachers. The second period was the music class and the pupils learned Korean National Anthem and the Kingston Korean School Song composed by Meeran Park, a music teacher. The most enthusiastic response from the pupils was drawn at the third period when Mr. Sungsoo Ha, PE teacher, taught the basic Taekwondo stances, along with yoga stretching exercises. It felt a little bit hard and yet all pupils including some teachers joined the exciting exercise and enjoyed it a lot with sweat. During the break time, pupils ate apples and drank water in an orderly manner which reminded of the virtue and beauty of the second generation young Koreans living and growing in an advanced country like U.K. Before the last period, Rev. Byungki Ahn from the Korean Young Kwang Church, said blessing for the pupils and teachers with words of the Bible which encouraged them to be good listeners in line with the School Motto. Moreover, it was doubly blessed by the presence of Edward Lucy, a Korean Anglican Sister, who supported classes and took care of pupils with warm heart. The last period began with interesting quizzes by Mr. John Junghoon Kwak, art teacher, who illustrated a basic technique of sketching a still image through a graceful white orchid. Pupils learned how to find the centre of an object, how to determine composition, focusing on the significance of light which varies images of an object. Mr. Kwak’s method of demonstration drew attention of pupils despite their weariness after P.E. After the competition and classes were done, Pupils parted with their teachers and new friends, saying with all smiles, “See you next week!” The historical opening day of the Kingston Korean School thus implanted a dream in the hearts of young Korean pupils, parents and teachers, a dream to be strengthened and motivated by Korean School, a dream to grow big and give service to the community in which they live together. The School appreciates the helpful mind of Mr. Reese and Mrs Julia for the gathering. This report is supposed to be released also in the Coombe Girls’ School web page. One of the significant aims of Kingston Korean School is to enhance the understanding and participation of community members so that they may have a keen interest in learning Korean language and culture. That is the reason why all happenings of Korean School are reported both in Korean and English. All members of Kingston Korean School believe such sharing and communication as a necessary process for foreigners to become local community members in this country. In addition, Year 4 pupils gathered together after school and played football at 3:00 p.m. on the Malden Centre pitch under the supervision of their class teacher, Kiyoung Jin. Interestingly enough, they all wore the Manchester United shirt with number 7 on their backs and enjoyed their play time with Mr. Jin. Football match will be held regularly after school for fun and increasing team spirit. After school, teachers took lunch at one of Korean restaurants and shared their exciting, happy opening day; their untiring passion moved the Head Teacher. Kingston Korean School, locating in Coombe Girls’ School, will be operated on every Saturday from 2:15 to 5:15 p.m. The School does apologies for the changed time due to the difficulty of renting in the morning time unlike the previous advertisement. The main subjects of the school are Korean language(including Chinese characters), math, and community life; music, art and P.E. will be provided on the three week basis. The School extends sincere thanks for the people who donated a variety of books for the pupils. Kingston Korean School is proud of having the qualified outstanding teachers who are equipped with expertise and experience to guide pupils who need to know Korean well or who wish to catch up with the level of the pupils in Korea. Furthermore, small class is undoubtedly one of the strong points of this new school. This school was opened for the first time in New Malden and the third in London. It cooperates with Kingston Council for the benefit of whole community members beyond the race, culture and religion.
